I ask Reddit for the profile
Through Reddit's official API, without logging in, so I get the same answer any stranger gets: the public profile, or nothing. A shadowbanned account returns nothing, as if it never existed (on the website that reads "This account has been banned").

I ask if the name is taken
Second API question. If the profile is hidden and the name is taken, that is a shadowban. If the name is free, the account simply does not exist.

Once every 20 hours
Each name gets one live check per 20 hours. Everyone else sees the stored result, which keeps Reddit friendly towards me.
From the terraces
Getting shadowbanned feels like being sent off without seeing the card. The good news: most honest accounts come back, and you don't have to wait alone. Check, read up, appeal, and let the monitor do the daily refresh for you.
